English Dub Season Review: Sasaki and Peeps Season One

Overview:

Sasaki is a middle-aged office worker who lives a very mundane life. This changes when he gets a pet java sparrow, which he names Peeps. Peeps is actually a reincarnated starsage from another world, so Sasaki’s life gets a lot more interesting.

Our Take:

Sasaki just wants to spice his life up a bit when he gets a pet bird. He has no idea that Peeps is actually a reincarnated starsage, named Piercarlo, from another world. Sasaki has to believe this when Peeps transports him to his home world. Sasaki starts business ventures in that world and Peeps even starts teaching him magic.

This helps Sasaki unintentionally get a new job at a psychic investigation bureau. His new job involves investigating and apprehending rogue psychics. He keeps the source and nature of his abilities a secret from everyone, but some people do end up finding out a little more than Sasaki originally would have liked.

I like this show’s incorporation of magic. It throws every magic system known to man together, but I honestly think it works. There are characters bouncing between worlds, so it makes sense to me for different magic systems to exist at once. It would be nice to have them explained a little more, but I still find it entertaining.

Sasaki and Peeps are both likeable and entertaining main characters. I like how Sasaki is always calm and willing to negotiate. He uses the skills he learned from his office job to help get himself and others out of some tough situations. He even manages to convince a ruler in Peeps’ world to call off an execution. Plus, I love seeing Sasaki’s to whenever Peeps does something adorable.

Peeps is a cool character to watch. I like learning more about his backstory, which I would still like to know more about. It’s also cool to see that he’s still very powerful even though he has a much smaller form now. His java sparrow form is super adorable too, for the record.

There are some other entertaining characters, such as Hoshizaki, Futari Shizuka, and Akutsu. We don’t get to see as much as of the side characters as I would have liked. That’s mainly because the show balances priorities between the two worlds, which have different sets of side characters. That can cause the show to feel a bit disjointed at times. It can be a nice change of pace, but I wish it was a bit more consistent.

I could say the same with the actual plot. There is still so much that hasn’t been explained and just doesn’t make sense. A second season has been confirmed, so hopefully that will iron out more details. Just judging the first season though, it is pretty messy.

I enjoy the visuals and the voice acting enough. Nothing really stands out to me besides Peeps’ characters design. As a whole, this is a show that has a lot of flaws. However, it’s not impossible to look past them and still enjoy it for what it is. Sasaki and Peeps is a fun watch, and I appreciate another reverse isekai coming in and giving viewers a nice alternative from the usual tropes the genre has to offer.
