English Dub Review: Metallic Rouge “Family Portrait”

Rouge and Naomi begin their journey to Venus to stop the Immortal Nine, but an unlikely stowaway makes themselves known…

Our Take

Metallic Rouge continues to casually have yet another identity crisis this week. Again, we have another fun episode that’s real enjoyable in a vacuum– but only makes me question why an episode like this didn’t happen earlier. Cyan was a character who spent most of her screentime looking smug and mysterious from a distance. When she finally gets some proper speaking lines it was just more vague nonsense; which makes up about 80% of the show at this point– so she didn’t leave that much of a proper impression. Now… She’s just full on acting like a kid. It’s cute that they meaningfully turned her being Rouge’s “little sister” on it’s head, but it feels far too late for this now. Why change her character so radically this late into the show?

Really that could extend to most of the show at this point.

I am rather impressed at how casually they go with this entire thing. We do cut back to the Immortal Nine a couple of time in the episode– more on them later– but for the most part it’s just Rouge, Naomi, and Cyan messing around for 24 minutes; trying to forge and establish a family-like dynamic that is pretty cute. Also, Detective Ash is still there too. Maybe he could be the deadbeat uncle. 

There’s also a lot of talk about memories this time around. When we cut to the Immortal Nine we see them reminiscing about the past in a very abstract, overly idyllic way. Apart of me wants to believe that their “memories of the past” were either fabricated or implanted in their minds. It’s not the first time the show’s played with perception– as seen with Rouge in episode 5. That’s my crackpot theory for this week, can’t wait to see how they manage to top it next episode.

A cute, but ultimately unnecessary episode. Onto the next…
