English Dub Review: Dr. Stone: New World: “Ray of Despair, Ray of Hope”

Overview: Senku (Aaron Dismuke), Kohaku (Felecia Angelle), Gen (Brandon McInnis), and Soyuz (Aaron Roberts) explore the newfound island while the remaining crew onboard are hit with a troubling ordeal.

Our Take: The crew finally make land and it doesn’t waste any time hitting the ground running unlike previous episodes. Scoping out the island brings some shocking challenges, the first of which being the petrification of most of the crew.

Suika resurfacing, after stowing away on the ship, presents an interesting new pair of eyes. One that’ll undoubtedly be more helpful than Soyuz in his unnecessary role, offering nothing of value aside from obvious observations. Senku and the scout group’s investigation of the inhabitants and means to save their friends result in an excellent new character, Amaryllis. That’s due in part to the forensics leading up to her introduction. The advances made in the investigation are beyond farfetched in how blazingly fast small details are picked up on. However, macgyvering real world science is a treat in the realistic and gradually exciting breakthroughs of the case.

Amaryllis, in and of herself, is excessively theatrical about her beauty and an absolute charmer, because of that. With her appearance she brings new info about the Master’s ruthlessness in petrifying anyone who stands against him. So much so that its starting uprisings, case in point being in her village. This provides Senku and the crew a chance to show their scientific prowess in action. Their actions pave the way for an interesting new team-up with her.
