English Dub Review: Lupin III Part VI “My Mother’s Documents”

Overview

Our Take

For this episode, we now have another almost self-contained storyline written by guest-writer Koichi Chigira who has an extensive track record of works such as Tokyo Babylon 1 & 2 and has mostly done key animation and storyboards for various other shows such as involving certain episodes of Last Exile, High School Agent and the anime classic, Ninja Scroll.

It’s insane how in the span of a week, the series can go from mermaid fanfiction to possibly one of the most psychologically darkest stories Lupin would ever delve into. With subject matter such as implied sexual assault, planned murder, etc. And honestly, not many Lupin stories come to mind that is nearly as dark as this. Unlike previous episodes that were mostly guest-written one-shots, this actually ties into the newest ongoing arc of this Season as we also get more information about Tomoe, but again, I’m left with even more questions to ask now about her than answers.

Overall, I loved the tension of that episode. It’s clear that whatever episodes this season has left, could be building up to something big, but now I’m just more confused by the revelations regarding Lupin’s current person of interest. Tomoe seems to have an extensive history of teaching people and seems to be getting more and more students and it’s increasingly difficult to understand what she’s trying to accomplish, whether or not she’s alive, and how Mattea is related to all this given the last time we saw her, she attempted to kill two people associated with Zenigata who also makes an appearance in the episode’s cliffhanger…
