English Dub Review: The Demon Girl Next Door “The Ancestor’s Dojo?! Demonkind’s Ultimate Weapon!”

Overview

Shamiko can’t use her magic rod right because of a lack of imagination. Special training in Lilith’s sealed space will help her. Maybe?

Our Take

A little mishmash as Mikan, Ryoko, Lilith, and even Anri got some valuable screen time and felt good. As for Momo, even while being crestfallen because of Mikan’s curse, she still believes in Shamiko’s power and so does Ryoko.

All this results in the insight that the most damage our clumsy demon can do is truly inside one’s dreams while in reality the magical fork is clearly misused. With an eager Ryoko joining Shamiko in her dreams (and meeting with Lilith for the first time this way), Shamiko got to training and let her imagination soar pretty damn high.

This was a fun episode for what it accomplished. Apparently, the dub felt the need to make up a new word on the fly to emphasize Mikan’s disgust towards cockroaches by calling them “Groachies” which gave me a chuckle. It was also nice to see Lilith getting some deserved screentime as well, where she tried to help out with Shamiko and her inability to test the limits of her magical Item more effectively. Now I’m curious what direction they’ll possibly take next…
