English Dub Review: Lupin III Part VI “The Jet-Black Diamond”

Overview

A dark auction was held in the basement of London. The exhibit was the treasure of “Sieg the Pirate King” who was executed in a Brazilian prison after a rampage in the Atlantic Ocean 100 years ago. However, Lupin’s aim was an old kokeshi doll that was lost in it. Police officers invade the venue. During the confusion, Lupin obtains the map hidden in the kokeshi doll. This map shows the whereabouts of the undiscovered Sieg’s treasure, the “Jet-Black diamond”.

Our Take:

This time around we have another stand-alone episode written by a famous Japanese Mystery Novelist by the name of Kanae Minato who wrote a Sweet yet wacky little story with the classic “Unexpected” treasure twist. The way the old lady planned for everything to go down in combination with the execution of its later proceedings was on point and I loved every moment of it.

While there were a lot of the crazy Lupin antics, I expected to see a lot more of a cliche anime beach episode with Fujiko flaunting her sexiness, but there was barely any of that. The old lady twist was at least interesting and threw me off in a good way.

Overall a passable episode even if it felt wacky in places with the presence of “Lupin Powder” which supposedly baits Zenigata to his destination and Goemon riding a giant squid. I also don’t know which insane prop was more entertaining, the car through the window, the multiple squids, or the random sea turtle assist at the end. But all of it was never a dull moment. It may not link to the current ongoing Holmes/Raven subplot, but let’s hope the next episode does that…
