English Dub Review: Spy x Family “OPERATION STRIX”

Overview:

Twilight is an agent that works for WISE, Westalis’s intelligence agency, and he is tasked with investigating Desmond, who is in Ostania and planning to start a war. Twilight disguises himself as the psychiatrist Loid Forger and adopts a girl named Anya so that he can enroll her into the prestigious Eden College to get closer to his target. Unbeknownst to him, Anya is actually a telepath who can read people’s minds. One day, members of a mafia group that is after Twilight kidnaps Anya. Loid realizes that he needs to reconsider his priorities.

Our Take:

I have been WAITING for this one to get an anime. It’s one of my favorite manga and I really can’t wait for you all to experience this one. I watched the first episode of the sub and definitely did not expect a dub to happen so fast. I am hoping with people getting back into studios and this Funimation/Crunchyroll merger settling in, we will get closer to simuldubs like we were at pre-pandemic.

The aesthetic of this show is so good and interesting. It’s in a fictional world but it’s essentially Cold War-era Berlin. Which is a time period that doesn’t get all that much coverage to begin with so this is a unique setting. I will try to not be biassed when it comes to this show but to say I love this series would be an understatement.

What happens when a telepath and a spy become a family? Hilarious hijinks of course! Anya is absolutely adorable and after watching the sub my biggest worry was the person they got to do her voice. Well, I am worried no longer, Megan Shipman does such a great job. She nails how cute and sometimes outright dumb Anya can be. As for Loid, Alex Organ does the role of the master spy. He’s probably best known for voicing Aizawa in the first season of My Hero Academia but I think this will be his best role. In anime at least. I truly do believe that Spy x Family will be the anime of the season. The action scenes, while short were still incredibly well done and satisfying. You won’t find a show that blends humor, action, and (hopefully) romance as well as this one.
