Review: Fairview “Cancel Culture”

Overview

Fairview doesn’t cancel their anthem “Baby Let’s Rock” even though its musician Sammy Sugar faces harrowing accusations. Meanwhile, Breckman becomes a magician in hopes he’ll be considered too talented to cancel.

Our Take

The ironic part about this week’s episode of Fairview is that the series misses the point of cancel culture almost immediately and instead shoulders on a somewhat older liberal take on the subject altogether. Ya see, I actually agree with the town of Fairview as to whether or not to cancel their anthem because of Sammy Sugar’s accusations. Why? Because they are, in fact, accusations. Cancel culture is the act of trying to remove someone from their job because of an “accusation”. Not necessarily a conviction, or even evidence to support said accusation, just the accusation itself. So, as the writers of Fairview are attempting to write this episode for a select few Twitter followers, they aren’t even understanding their own episode title.

As a result, the episode’s plot falls apart very early on and the Twitter-approved punchlines really serve no purpose and are largely unfunny. Furthermore, the brash dialogue doesn’t get better regardless of how loud the characters scream at me for the duration of the 22-minutes. The cute character designs can only last me for so long, and I imagine that the same people this episode was intended for are the same people that South Park just got done roasting for 22-minutes prior.
