English Dub Season Review: Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory (Uncensored) Season One

Overview: When Koushi’s (Brittany Karbowski) house burns down and he is stranded, he accepts a job from a college student, Mineru (Carli Mosier), to be the mother of a dorm with a troublesome reputation known as the Goddess’ Dormitory.

Our Take: Mother of the Goddess’ Dormitory is, in many ways, what you might expect out of a typical harem. But in reality it’s actually…a typical harem. Although, it is not without any substance or entertainment value, which, at the end of the day, is all you can ask for when they go down a stereotypical path.

A (very) young man by the name of Koushi, who’s a kind gentleman, finds himself in a situation where he is at the service of young beautiful women in which various lewd hijinks ensue. And similarly to most other series of this nature, through all the relationships he has, there is a will-they-won’t-they romantic possibilities between Koushi and Atena, a college student who can’t stand to be around men without falling ill, except, you guessed it, Koushi! There are also possible hints to other relationships like that of tomboy, Kiriya, with the other girls more often than not merely serving to add on the fanservice. Now the one factor that made this entire premise uncomfortable at first was the massive age gap of Koushi and the girls in the dorm. However, with how innocent most of the moments that are popping with innuendos, it’s an aspect that I became comfortable with pretty quickly. That lewdness, by the way, can get real repetitive real quick with how many times Koushi accidently falls on a pair of boobs or some lady bits with very few instances of it deviating. But even with that, it is not without a certain comedic charm with how funny Koushi’s reactions can be and varying the girls’ can be.

The Goddesses all have distinguishing personalities from one another that make them each charming in their own right. But what makes, at least some of them, more engaging to watch than others, is how they show to be more complex than their seemingly one note characteristics. Kiriya, is a tomboy with feminine qualities kept under wraps that she feels would cause her to be alienated by how much it differs from what she presents about herself. Or Frey, a cosplayer who dresses up as others to understand others and different perspectives. Like these examples show, there are some genuinely good character moments here. And they are especially great heart-to-hearts when they are shared with Koushi as both try to help one another with some internal conflict and actually progress themselves forward.

However, there are also a considerable amount of generic characters that never go above and beyond, even a little. Like that of Koushi’s childhood friend, Sutea, being a tsundere through and through with her picture likely being in a thesaurus of the definition. In regards to our main unconsenting minor, Koushi, he’s your classic sweetheart that you can’t but adore through some of the tripfalls that come with falling in love. The English dub cast is also superb across the board with Brittany Karbowski bringing out Koushi’s kind and well-mannered demeanor well along with many others like Carli Mosier giving a lot of fun playful energy but a nonchalant attitude as Mineru or Natalie Rial’s dispassion yet ironically corky attitude as Serene.

Overall, Goddess’ Dormitory is nothing groundbreaking as far as raunchy comedy series go. However, if you decide to stay for the ride, you will find that there is something worth waiting for beyond the same ol’ repeated jokes and select paint-by-numbers characters, even if both slyly get a smirk out of you, in fun, likable characters along with emotional and unexpectedly detailed chemistry and moments scattered throughout.
