English Dub Review: Mars Red “The Letter”

Overview:

Defrott comes before the wounded Maeda to tell him about what happened with Misaki. She learned from Defrott the best way to do her role and managed to land the lead opposite of him in Romeo and Juliet. Kurusu got seen off by Aoi before leaving for Siberia. While rehearsing for Salome play props fell on Misaki and Defrott turned her to try to save her.

Our Take:

This episode was about ninety-eight percent flashback and I really liked it. I would like a little more background of Kurusu but this gave us most of what we need I suppose. We finally are confirmed that he and Aoi are childhood friends. It wasn’t exactly secret but it is good to be sure. I hope they have an interaction later and I think they will.

We got a bit of a peek into the machinations of Defrott and what makes him tick. I think we all had it in our mind that he was the one that turned Misaki but seeing that he didn’t do it maliciously did a lot for his character. I thought Defrott was the bad guy, to be honest, but it looks like that might not be the case and it’s actually the military along with Rufus.

Defrott was not a huge fan of Misaki at first but she eventually grew on him. He even went to the rehearsal and was blown away by her performance. So much so in fact that he decided to turn her into a vampire among other reasons I’m sure. When he stands before Maeda he clearly wants him to keep his promise to Misaki and stop whatever things her dad has planned.

What this show does really well are its characters. They are all interesting and multi-faceted I really can’t wait to see what happens with this one each week. Something tells me what happened to Misaki wasn’t an accident and I look forward to seeing how that all plays out. I have found when shows make you look forward to certain character interactions not just the advancement of the plot they tend to be the most interesting ones.

I have a bit of a question about how the episode ended though. It seemed to me that Defrott is about to turn Maeda into a vampire which I feel undoes the big moment Yamagami had in the last episode. Though maybe becoming a vampire through artificial blood is a lot different from a true vampire doing it so maybe I am wrong. Either way, I really can’t wait to see what happens next time.
