English Dub Review: Black Clover “The Golden Family”

Overview

As the “Golden Dawn” Magic Knight branch is hard at work trying to get the kingdom back onto its feet, they make a legit effort to redeem themselves for the trouble they had caused while they were elf-possessed. Captain Vangeance puts Alecdora Sandler in charge of a mission. Due to Alecdora’s arrogance and secret dislike for Yuno, he tries his best to 1-up him in terms of status…

Our Take

While it’s nice that Yuno’s group, the Golden Dawn, is getting some attention for a change of pace (after watching the Black Bulls for like weeks now). Going villager-saving and enemy-killing is like it’s just another day for them, A lot of people hate Yuno because he’s often the stoic attention-stealing, pretty-boy, wet blanket asshole, to Asta’s “hard-working outcast” archetype with Yuno who always often finishing things easily, and overshadowing Asta’s accomplishments, even if people forget the fact that Yuno is also struggling and is equally just as hardworking as Asta.

Aside from a cool new intro and end credits to mark the start of these new episodes, the heart of this story wasn’t just about a jealous jerk within the Golden Dawn wanting to top Yuno in the ranks, but also about Yuno as a person learning to connect with his own teammates on a friendly level. His new celebrity status amongst the Magic Knights may sound glamorous to a certain degree, yet it can also potentially put him on a pedestal that doesn’t help him connect with the very people he’s supposed to protect. But it’s also good to see that Yuno is starting to be appreciated and recognized by his fellow Golden Dawn members, aside from Klaus and Mimosa.

Overall, watching this episode also made me realize how little Yuno has been featured in this training arc against the upcoming Megicula Battle since he’s technically also supposed to be another protagonist within the franchise itself. I think he was only shown in one or two episodes since it started, but I’m at least glad we get to see the goings-on outside of the Black Bulls even if it’s just another filler episode.
