English Dub Review: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II OVA “Is It Wrong to Go Searching for Herbs on a Deserted Island?”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Daphne and Cassandra are at Miach’s for a request on herbs, but that quest got handed to Bell and the others as a vacation. Bell and the others go to a deserted island for a rare herb called the Everything Flower that lies at the center of the island. After a swimsuit fashion to decide who gets to spend the day with Bell, Ais suddenly appears with a huge bump on her head and has no memory other than her name. Hestia tricks Ais into thinking that Welf is her lover and Bell is distraught and runs only to fall into a cliff and becomes unconscious.

Meanwhile, Ryuu and the others search for the Everything Flower, she stumbles across a lake and has to tread over to the center to reach the floor. However the others only hear her screams, Welf goes into the forest to search for her only to end up the same way. One by one the others venture into the forest as Bell wakes up from his slumber. He grows concerned at everyone’s strange behavior and the beach starts crumbling as a volcano erupts. However, it turns out to be a dream of Cassandra’s when the scene transitions to her waking up and being at Miach’s again.

Our Take:

Here’s your obligatory beach OVA with the addition of a swimsuit show and mushroom growing on people’s heads. It’s pure fanservice with the swimsuit show and the scenes were Hestia and the other girls changing into their swimsuits. Bell having to choose between the girls then getting out of it by saying Aiz was a typical move for the shy protagonist. Besides, for a beach episode, it was lacking in beach-themed events like games or swimming. The swimsuit show and short scene of everyone eating barbeque were okay but not enough for me personally.
The Hestia familia with the mushrooms on top of their heads was an amusing scene along with the members going into the forest and then screaming like they’ve entered a nightmare. It added a bit of mystery to the OVA and a necessary conflict. Now, the fact that the ending ended up as Daphne’s dream was a bit of a letdown, but there were a few hints on how it was a dream. Take for example Aiz’s sudden appearance on the deserted island. Then there’s the Everything Flower which produced illusions of the viewer’s desire. For example, Welf and his blacksmith workshop, and then there’s Mikoto with her desire for a hot springs bath.

Overall, the OVA was funny and showed a glimpse of normalcy for Hestia familia which is in stark contrast to how the series usually is with its serious conflicts and wild antics.
