Ranking Every Episode of “Rick and Morty” Season Four From Worst To Best

  1. The Old Man and the Seat

This episode was a mixed bag for me. As much as I loved the bonkers and perfectly characteristic premise of Rick embarking on a quest to hunt down the stranger who used his secret toilet, the chase itself turned out to be little more than a strain of barely connected, picaresque chapters. For starters, Rick pays a visit to the restaurant his culprit ate at before their last bowel movement. Next, he goes to collect a microchip from the delivery bot that went off to fight in some android war. It is not until he finally tracks down the mystery shitter that the ball starts rolling, and even then the journey is short and anticlimactic. At the very least, I had expected a storyline that hung together well enough to be able to provide satisfying answers to questions like, “How does this alien know about Rick’s toilet?” and, more importantly, “How does he, an average Joe, have the means to get there not once, but twice?” In spite of these flaws, though, Harmon and Roiland still offer some clever dialogue and interesting concepts.  Too bad the same couldn’t be said about the subplot.
