Six Animated Films to Watch While Quarantined

Alfred J. Kwak (Netherlands/Germany/Japan)

What was originally envisioned by Dutch lyricist Herman van Veen as a simple, harmless children’s fable eventually grew into a sprawling anthropomorphized fictional world that incorporated not just human virtue, but vice as well. This fifty-two episode spanning series follows the titular Alfred as he matures from idealistic duckling into a still very idealistic duck striving to maintain his childlike innocence and goodness while learning, to put it bluntly, that the world—even his fairy tale one—is a very, very fucked up place. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the first episode, which sees an infant Alfred getting orphaned when his parents, two farmers, are killed by crooked business tycoons looking to buy up land to develop an amusement park. Yet another episode sees Alfred’s childhood playmate Dolf the Crow (pictured above— please try to note the moustache and then re-read his name) taking over the government and establishing a national-socialist-like dictatorial party. Was this show actually intended for kids? Yes, yes it was.
