We Pick Five Episodes of Harvey Birdman That Are Still Relevant Today

2) Season 2, Episode 1: “Blackwatch Plaid”

What this was about:
Due to a recent supposed burglary, Phil Ken Sebben starts including more surveillance at work. This leads to increasing violations of his employees’ personal privacy. When Harvey protests this as simply being paranoid, he’s mocked for supporting the thieves, but then has to go defend Secret Squirrel on charges of indecent exposure. Unexpectedly, Phil’s overzealous security measures end up actually proving Squirrel guilty, but then a leaked tape of Phil himself gets everything taken down, showing both the pros and cons of being this observant.

How it relates now:
This episode aired in 2004, when the impact of 9/11 was still fresh in the people’s minds. So, increased government scrutiny seemed like the natural next step for awhile and any objections were met with ridicule that they wanted the terrorists to win. The title refers to a parody of the color-coded threat system used by Homeland Security at the time. However, despite that system being done away with in 2011, the question of freedom vs. security is still present in the choices people make today, where personal information is often given up or stolen for people’s convenience while making them more susceptible for monitoring by the government. One can only imagine what an episode about this show regarding social media would be like.
