Review: Gary And His Demons “Gary The Bodyguard”
Watch this.
Overview (Spoilers Below)
This week, Gary becomes the bodyguard for a demon that doubles as a porn actor. With his octopus-like form, Mike’s tentacles make him a popular star with the hentai watching audience which allows him to make a fine living but also makes for pissed off co-workers who want him dead. That’s where Gary comes in, hired originally to keep a watch out for Mike, Gary eventually grows to have a bit more of a serious relationship with Mike which comes to a head at the paradoxical take on the AVN awards where for the second time someone tries to kill Mike. Fortunately, the suspect is apprehended before any real damage is done, but the attempt on his life inspires Mike to move to a different part of the world that also enjoys hentai as much as we do, but hopefully won’t have any jealous assassins hot on his tale.
Our Take
“Gary the Bodyguard” becomes one of the most ambitious episodes of an adult animated series to have been posted this year. The producers took their lead character, moved him out of a sexual paradigm that he was in for almost a dozen episodes, and now give him a different light on his personality that now makes Gary look way more vulnerable than before and casts his way differently. I don’t know of another North American-produced show that would be THIS brave to change the sexual orientation of their lead character on the fly and do it just as eloquently as any romance movie or book I’ve ever seen. It’s really quite compelling, coupled with the fact that we get introduced to “Mike” who comes off as the best-written demon of the season in a plot that was a fun “Who Shot John” plot that we may have seen before, however, the plot points were enveloped with such an enriching backdrop that I bet the producers could have done a whole feature film with this idea. I came away really impressed with Gary And His Demons, the show has been growing in its efficiency, and this is the type of stuff that I hope would lend itself to the second season because I’d like to see everything about the production amplified to the nth degree.
Score

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
