Review: We Bare Bears “Dog Hotel”

Who let the dog out?

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The episode begins when the bears are getting their home fumigated but are told by the exterminator that it’ll “take all night”. So they decide to use a “Dog Hotel” as a place to stay for the duration as they don’t have enough cash for a normal hotel and refuse to stay with Charlie. Grizz, Panda, and Ice Bear infiltrate the hotel and this is where we encounter the caretaker that runs the place named “Joshy” who blindly thinks the Bears are actual dogs due to a forged letter from the bears claiming their owners just dropped them off with a small amount of cash.

Much of the episode is spent on the Bears at first embracing the luxuries of their deception towards Joshy but it doesn’t last when Panda & Ice Bear begin to face the consequences of their facade in different ways. Grizz ends up having too much fun and desires to stay another week much to the dismay of his two brothers, that is until Grizz gets into a mishap that leads to a dangerous misunderstanding between him and Joshy. The episode comically ends when Grizz learns his lesson and hilariously almost urinates on a random hydrant due to the prolonged conditioning he experienced at the hotel.

Our Take

While the episode itself had a few clever jokes, the highlight of it was the 3rd act chase sequence during Grizz’s mishap that moved at a good pace. I think my biggest complaint with the episode is the awfully bland & simple-minded characterization of Joshy. How many grown adults do you know get easily excited at the sound of sirens from fire trucks & ambulances that drive-by? It kinda makes you wonder if he even has a social life outside the workplace which I hope they’ll flesh out at some point in a future episode.
