English Dub Review: Seven Mortal Sins “The Proud Fallen Angel”

This should be considered the 8th mortal sin.

Seven Mortal Sins. Right off the bat during researching and prepping for this review I kept running into information for The Seven Deadly Sins due to the similarity of the titles. But while that series is full of fun, fast paced action and animation and some slight ecchi adult elements the Seven Mortal Sins is hilariously bad, with stilted animation and filled to the brim with T&A. The basic story is the archangel Lucifer is cast out of heaven and banished into the lowest circle of hell, like the story from the bible. Except in this case though all the angels and demons present are played by busty women with the classic Japanese light blur censorship or spinning pentagram over any nipple or vagina. Now with nothing much else to do Lucifer decides to try and take over as the head of the Seven Mortal Sins who are the demon kings of hell which include Satan, Beelzebub, Belial, Beelzebub, Mammon, Belphegor, and Asmodeus.

It is a major stigma in the anime culture that most shows that advertise itself to be a story with busty women will be shallow and vapid PG-13 masturbation material. It’s not hard to see where that stigma came from and the true examples of such a thought process especially during the early years of the anime culture in the west where big boobs were used as selling points. However, I always strive to think we can even put intelligence in our stupider narrative ideas. For example, a show that I really admire is Keijo!!!!!!!! which on first impressions is just a dumbass show about girls butt and boob wrestling, and it is, but Keijo also invokes a lot of the same action-packed tone and atmosphere you would see in other sports anime in the same genre. This allows the jiggly boobs and butts in the show to have, for lack of a better word, a stronger impact on the viewer as it is parodying sports anime while also standing on its own in its own way.

Seven Mortal Sins is nothing like that. It’s sadly a validation of that stigma as on the surface and at its core it centers itself on the wide array of women and proceeds to either put them in lesbian sex scenes, female on female molestation scenes or just let the characters have wardrobe malfunctions for the audience that can’t see them past the censor. It comes off very shallow writing wise as the admittedly nicely rendered world of hell and even the human world are made the setting for just irritating smut. But don’t get me wrong I can enjoy smut content if it’s played over the top or with a breath of self-awareness. Seven Mortal Sins though presents its smut by some of the most cardboard stiff and unnatural performances I have heard in a while.

From Lucifer to the Seven Mortal Sins themselves each gives what could be generously described as the bare minimum archetypical performance but at worst makes the viewer question why does one of the demon lords of hell have a Texan accent? An Irish accent? A dull as nails tough girl voice? The script already reads like an essay on the bible told by a bored 14-year-old but in the show, it is like it is read by a cast they found randomly outside on the street one day.

So for presentation Seven Mortal Sins sucks a different sort of ring of hell, but I do wonder what the next episode will bring? As the pilot is mostly just a setup to give Lucifer her demon powers and introduce briefly the (frankly unimpressive) powers of the Seven Mortal Sins. We end the first episode with the second meeting of Lucifer and a catholic high school girl named Maria. I am intrigued by where it goes as everything that happened involving Maria made absolutely no sense. At the beginning of the episode Lucifer shoots her own blood into Maria’s chest then Lucifer vanishes to hell only to return at the end to stab Maria in the chest. It isn’t an intrigue like I’m wondering how this will unfold for the overarching narrative, I’m more wondering what they will pull out of their butt as their expositional explanation to what is going on.

So, I’ll continue watching Seven Mortal Sins just to see where this stupid roller coaster ride will go. But as for my final thoughts for all of you there is much better written, better animated and honestly far sexier anime out there then Seven Mortal Sins. It’s just far too simple minded to really wow you with its stupid nature like High School of the Dead did for people and just too badly presented to be tongue and cheek like Keijo!!!!!!!! Seven Mortal Sins is just simply put an example of a sin of lust and sloth.
