Comics Review: Adventure Time #61
A new character saves the day.
Spoilers Ahead:
In the last issue, a completely new character slipped through a portal in her world and wound up on the moon. Upon arriving, she draws the laser sword, and while wondering if it’s strong enough to destroy the two evil gods, meets Finn. She introduces herself as Penelope and her companion as Tigercorn, and then Finn explains to them how the sword works.
Finn says that in order to use the sword successfully, the user cannot be injured. Penelope thinks that may be an issue since she has been seriously wounded in the past. She also wonders if the sword’s laser is strong enough to strike the deities all the way on Ooo, but Finn reveals that he has constructed amplification devices that will help.
Penelope powers up the sword and fires it, which instantly melts Zon off the sun. The Chef responds and attacks Penelope, ripping off her right arm. Finn panics, worrying that the sword will no longer work, but Penelope reveals that her lost arm is actually bionic. The Chef picks Finn up, and is about to consume him when Penelope wields the sword and destroys it. Finn realizes that since Penelope’s lost arm was a bionic one, she has managed to fulfill the prophecy by surviving the attack without injury to her physical body.
The three return to Ooo, and Finn wonders how they will fix the paradox, for as long as the sword exists, reality cannot return to normal. Penelope reveals that she has a jar of dimensional crystal goo which can wipe out anything from existence. She says that she found the goo under his house, and Finn panics, wondering how Penelope can know his identity if she’s from an apocalyptic future. Penelope explains that she is Finn’s future reincarnation, which enabled her to use clues from his life to defeat the two deities. Penelope then uses the goo to open up a wormhole and drops the sword in. It resets the timeline, and the two deities are gone from existence.
Finn warps to a few issues back when he was about to cut a giant sandwich, and manages to do so without a problem this time. He thinks about how there is always something crazy happening in Ooo, but living there is still a lot of fun.
Overview:
This marks the end of the moon arc, and it wraps up rather neatly. The action is very straightforward, with the problem easily solved once Penelope enters the story.
The last issue focused on Finn’s methods of coping during his centuries of loneliness, and now we see that his efforts were worthwhile. Finn’s time alone on the moon is not for naught, for he manages to build a successful amplification device that helps destroy the two deities. At the very end, even if he won’t remember Penelope when the timeline resets, he still appreciates having met her.
The most interesting part of the issue is the revelation that Penelope is one of Finn’s future incarnations. Several incarnations have been mentioned throughout the series with lasting effects on the story, such as Shoko and the purple butterfly. And now another one has been added to the lineup. While the timeline reset meant that we don’t get to see much of Penelope or her world, hopefully, there will be more of her in future issues, or even in the show. She is spunky and determined and has a lot of personality.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
