Review: Steven Universe “Steven vs Amethyst”

The battle of the century.

After yesterday’s episode, Amethyst is feeling pretty low. When Steven goes to train with Pearl, Amethyst sneakily joins in. Pearl gives them a variety of tasks, which she make her think Amethyst is going easy on Steven. But she’s not. Amethyst seriously can’t beat Steven.

Steven, knowing that Amethyst is feeling bad, tries to raise her spirits by offering to play a fighting video game with her after training is over. Amethyst wins but she knows that Steven let her win. That is when she admits that Steven is a better fighter than her. Steven disagrees and the two devolve into a “who is worse” fight, resulting in Amethyst challenging Steven to a duel.

The two friends go to the ruins to duel. While the two do fight, they pretty much end in a tie. They agree to work harder to become better fighters. Afterwards, Pearl steps into the ruins, horrified that Steven and Amethyst ruined the ruins.

I am glad that Amethyst was able to admit to Steven that she has self-esteem issues. Not only does that mean that she is able to admit her shortcomings to herself, but she is also able to hear Steven’s self-esteem problems and accept that she isn’t the only one with problems. Together, they should be able to work hard to become awesome despite the fact that Amethyst is small and Steven isn’t Rose Quartz. They will be awesome as themselves.
