Review: Star Wars Rebels “Out of Darkness”

“Out of Darkness” was, well, it was a thing.

I have to say, with the exception of the haphazardly put together Spark of Rebellion episodes, I have enjoyed Star Wars Rebels. I am not sure how to take “Out of Darkness,” though. I thought giving us an episode away from Kanan and his unorthodox way of training Ezra, would be a decent change of pace, but it turned out to be an episode about the two character s on this show that no one really cares about. Why, you ask? There was no character development for either Hera and Sabine in any of the prior episodes. Well, except Hera owns the ship they’re on, and Sabine just really likes blowing stuff up. Nothing before, or nothing given in the episode, really expanded either character.

To be quite honest, the interaction between the two seemed very forced. You’ve never seen Hera and Sabine be very friendly, nor do you see anything about Sabine’s past in the Mandalorian Academy. All of this was thrusted on us. None of it was conveyed in an episode, or a short. So, how are we going to know what Sabine’s motives were for leaving the Academy? Because I sure as hell wouldn’t know, and I know a lot of about the movies. In fact, these two have had the least to do in the entire series thus far.

It was rather quaint to tease some form of sexual tension between Kanan and Hera. It almost reminded me of Kirk from Star Trek, only because he would bang out every color alien female he can get his greasy hands on. If this progresses, it goes against what the Jedi preach, and the last one to do that got a Rainbow Brite chest piece and a cool helmet. I guess there’s really not too much of a loss there. It all depends on what side of the fence you lean on.  I wasn’t really digging it, plus it didn’t really fit into what little character Hera actually showed thus far, and nothing was shown that Kanan wanted it.

The momentum of that was built off of the previous four episodes, and made the show hit a brick wall like a train. I was lost for the episode, trying to get where the writers wanted “Out of Darkness” to go. Yet, it never seemed like it wanted to go anywhere. If there was ever an instance called a filler episode, this was it. There was nothing to expand the greater story, nor any of the characters, even though the characters utilized two characters who didn’t have much to do yet. Maybe calling this a trainwreck is too much. However, the tires spun so hard this week, the ditch was inescapable. I felt bad, because I had some really big expectations for “Out of Darkness.”

Now, the question is, where does Rebels go from here? They can keep going off the track, and run the risk of keeping the tires in the ditch. Or, they can get this ship off the ground, and get this running back into hyperspace. This is the problem with episodes that don’t push the story along.  Things just kind of get stagnate when you’re putting out episodes that don’t go anywhere. I am hoping that next week goes back to the Empire vs. the Rebels. I promise that i won’t bitch and moan about filler episodes again if we get an episode that has something to do with the Empire. Please? This was not a good episode, to say the least. Momentum needs to comes back, and soon.
