Review: American Dad ‘Cock of the Sleepwalk’
Spoilers Below
Stan Smith has achieved his 100th kill, everyone. Don’t they grow up so fast? After reaching the milestone by killing a Russian assassin, Stan begins to do weird things in his sleep. By weird things, I mean nice things. Stan begins to do nice things in his sleep such as watching ‘The Notebook’ with Francine, adopting a shelter dog and opening a soup kitchen in his living room. It turns out that the odd behavior is being caused by Stan’s conscience. The guilt of his 100th kill was too much to bear, causing him to act kindly in his sleep. Matters only get worse when he can longer kill anybody and ends up losing his job!
This episode wasn’t that great for me. I didn’t find myself laughing very much and the story itself was lacking, in my opinion. Even Roger, my favourite character, wasn’t selling it for me this time around. Another complaint I have about the episode is that there was a lot of Stan. What I enjoy about these shows is seeing the interactions between all of the different characters, but I feel the rest of the family was there to serve as a plot device. It was more forgivable at the end, I must mention.
There were some things I did enjoy about this episode though! Mr.Bullock stole the show for me, once again. The few times I did genuinely laugh this episode were because of him. I think the joke that made me laugh the most though was when Stan was speaking with the bum on his couch, and another bum approaches and asks if anybody is going to pee here (the couch). The first bum very calmly says “yes”, and that was it. There wasn’t much to it, but I guess the simplicity of it was what I appreciated the most. I also really enjoyed how Stan figured out how to solve the problem of his conscience.
Overall, it was an okay episode. It won’t be one I save on my DVR for the next week to rewatch though. It’s very rare that I enjoy an episode of Family Guy more than I enjoy American Dad these days, but tonight was one of those nights. Perhaps my expectations of American Dad were a little high tonight, but I think some of the jokes could have been written better.
