REVIEW: CHINA IL “CHINA-MAN BEGINS”
HEY DEAN, YOU SEEIN’ THIS? SPOILERS BELOW
Man, China did a lot of stuff right in this weeks episode. Like, a lot. If there’s one thing I enjoy its when things don’t turn out the way you expect them to. Now, you’d THINK that this would happen a lot in entertainment – but really, Batman never dies. I mean, how worried can you REALLY be about a situation if in the back of your head you know there’s gonna be another iteration (movie, episode, whatever)? I think its the combination of ‘this is a cartoon world without limitations’ and ‘each one of our characters is capable of [extreme] failure and success’ that makes certain scenarios within this show so great.
Keep me guessing and never give me what I expect or ‘want’ (in terms of plot progression). I mean for example, the part of the episode where Frank is giving a massage (I won’t spoil this by telling you context) I was literally cringing. That’s pretty tough to do, especially through animation, but god dammit I was genuinely reviled.
Additionally, besides toying with my emotions, this episode featured a good array of “oh my god what in the actual fuck? YES” moments that were quickly followed by my approving laughter. I’m a critical fuck and they broke down my fuck-barrier, so I mean, that’s the goal here kids – this is comedy after all.
Sometimes I feel like giving a plot overview, but this time I just don’t – so I’m not going to. Our ‘preview’ posts have this covered in a sentence or two for those who really care. But honestly, if you are reading my reviews to find out whether an episode is ‘watch worthy’ or not, then I’ve already done my job. Watch.
I will be recommending this episode to friends as a good starter episode of China, IL (among many others of course) – so if you’ve been looking for a good opportunity to do so as well, this is a superb choice.
Boobs.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
