COMICS REVIEW: SIMPSONS COMICS SUPERNOVA
Spoilers Below
UNCLE BURNS
Mr. Burns is planning an exciting adventure to find buried treasure and with Smithers on Burn Notice, Homer seems like the next best option. Seeing this as an opportune moment for a relaxing few days by herself, Marge insists the kids go with Homer and Monty on their quest for riches. To start, Frink has put together a contraption that sees them sail away on a big ol’ wooden ship with a heading towards a huge volcano. As expected, the Simpsons and Burns have to climb the volcano in order to grab a gold key so that they can open up the treasure box. They do just that, and afterwards the group ‘ollie’s’ down the side of the mountain and back onto the ship. After a quick lunch break, everyone on board puts on their scuba gear and heads under water to find a chest. However, before they can do anything the group gets attacked by a bunch of sea Snakes! The snakes put up a good fight and even ruin the group’s breathing equipment by hurling starfish, but they are no match for Maggie’s aqua powers! After the battle, the group finds the huge treasure chest and open it up, but Burns decides to try and pull a fast one on the Simpsons on both the gold and the return trip back. Thankfully, Lisa’s quick-thinking gets the Simpsons back on board and home safely. Lucky for them, Burns strikes a deal to give them their helium weight in gold (which is zip, zero, and nada). That said, karma turns course and sends Burns to the clinic in a shared room right next to Smithers just in time for the start of summer!
SOFA SO GOOD
Homer starts up a cult following because his skin has become so greasy he can perform escape artist tricks and be famous for doing them on Krusty. However, no matter how big you get whether you are Justin Bieber, a talking teddy bear, or a renowned escape artist, eventually nobody gives a shit. This inspires Homer to come up with a new gag where he is going to sleep on the couch for a year and do nothing so that he can get some sort of a record and TV will love him again. This has Lisa furious, so she decides to make her name by coming up with some sort of a unique plant so that she can make a legit name for herself. However, despite her best efforts nothing seems to work for the 8 year old vegan. That is until Marge cooks up some BBQ! This causes Homer to get up off his ass only for Lisa to discover that Homer’s back gave way to a new species of fungus. With this, Lisa is able to make a deal with Luigi for her mushrooms on his pizza, and this gives Bart a perfect idea for a name!
ANCHORMOM
Marge’s air is able to figure out the weather and it quickly lands her a gig on the evening news as the new weather-lady. Soon enough, Marge starts making changes to how the studio does things and the ratings rise as a result so Kent and the rest of the crew go along with it. Eventually she gets the attention of local advertisers whom are tired of Marge’s wholesome methods as she rises thru the ranks to become the co-anchor. To counteract, the advertisers start in on an ad campaign to ruin Marge’s good name, even if it isn’t true. Thankfully, Bart and Lisa spring into action and are able to right wrongs, even getting Marge’s job back after she was cut loose. That said, Marge quits anyway because she wants to spend more time with her family.

DOWN IN THE DUMPS

Once at the dump, they meet up with some locals whom tell them about a local legend regarding some buried trash treasure. Eventually, the kids find it and Martin goes nuts, but the Comic Book Guy shows up and a fight ensues. Turns out Bart’s gun has been at home the whole time, but where’s his Radioactive Man??
ANGRY DAD in THE WRONG STUFF
In space, no one can hear your head explode!
This issue just seems like a mess and you can tell because the first page has listed ‘The Duffman Cometh” as one of the stories but actually we get ‘Lisa Simpson’s Book Club’ which was maybe one of the most convoluted stories someone could’ve picked to put in this collection. The first couple of stories are a lot of fun, but there isn’t a good amount of variety to be had in this issue. For instance, I would’ve loved some Radioactive Man, or the promised Duffman as I think that would have made the issue a better value. Overall, instead of a Supernova, we get a Super-dud of a collection that was mis-advertised and @ $16 is a harsh penalty to pay for that.
