The Midnight Gospel is an original adult animated series co-created by Pen Ward (Adventure Time) and Duncan Trussell with Duncan voicing the lead role as “Clancy”. Like Duncan, Clancy travels to different universes so that he can interview the locals for his podcast. The series is produced by Titmouse Studios and directed by Mike Mayfield who in the past has worked on Mr. Pickles and currently works on Big Mouth.

Pen Ward is the creator of Adventure Time, so right off the bat in the trailer you can definitely sense an otherworldly-ness that’s indicative of what Pen has done before. This will be Pen’s first adult animated series, but it looks like he’s off to a good start. Working with Duncan Trussell who is usually a very outside-the-box guest when he shows up on Joe Rogan and The Midnight Gospel definitely has that pathos.

We’ve had quite a few space adult animated series over the last couple of years, but this one feels different. While Rick and Morty is going for laughs and Final Space continues to try and figure itself out, The Midnight Gospel seems to dive head first into the theory of the multiverse which has been explored quite a bit by the likes of Futurama, Family Guy, and the aforementioned Rick and Morty. While in most cases seen as a device to set up gags, Clancy’s journey appears more ‘matter-of-fact’ with him just trying to make a well-produced podcast because…let’s face it…everyone’s got a podcast.

There’s a reason why The Midnight Gospel is releasing on 4/20/20, the holiday once revered as “National Smoke Pot Day”. Nowadays the term “4-20” has somewhat lost it’s luster as cannabis culture has become more of an everyday habit much the same way as food or toothpaste and with it the type of comedy that usually accompanies weed-inspired content. Long gone are the days of Cheech and Chong or Jay and Silent Bob’s jokes about eating a bunch of Doritos after getting high and instead we’re in a time of marijuana providing for pathos of a given series. Contemporary examples include Lucas Bros. Moving Company, Lazor Wulf, and The Midnight Gospel looks to be the latest in this line.
