This Week In Obituaries: Penny Marshall

Here’s why she’s important to the history of adult animation.

Legendary groundbreaking director and producer Penny Marshall passed away this week at the age of 75. The Laverne & Shirley star would go on to have a stellar directing career which includes classic films like A League of Their Own and Big, along with being the very first guest star for The Simpsons in the episode entitled “The Babysitter Bandit” as “Ms. Botz”.

This episode happened to be the first episode produced for the unveiling of The Simpsons, however, was not finished in time for the premiere date which subsequently led to this episode becoming the first episode of The Simpsons to premiere instead. That said, Penny’s turn as “Botz” was excellent in a villain role that saw the character essentially keep Bart and Lisa kidnapped until an unexpected hero emerges. This episode is also notable for having a few other guest stars, including the legendary June Foray, but Botz more or less steals a lot of this episode.

We lend our condolences to the family of Penny Marshall.
