“The Simpsons” Predicted Buffalo Bills In The Playoffs ; UK Tier 4 Lock Down

While UK fans are pining for The Simpsons Movie after news that the country has to go on a tier 4 lock down following a new strain of COVID-19, the more startling comparison is coming via the NFL here in the United States. For the first time in 25 years, the Buffalo Bills will be hosting a playoff game after having won the AFC East last weekend after smashing the New England Patriots 38-9. After the win, Governor Andrew Cuomo had made the announcement that he is going to let a limited number of fans into the game which should be a scene that sounds familiar from The Simpsons episode “D’oh Canada” where Homer did a song entitled “New York, New York” where he teased the hell out of Upstate NY with victims including Utica, Syracuse, and Rochester’s Kodak plant.

The most prominent victim of the aforementioned song was the Buffalo Bills where a scene featured Homer in a nearly empty Bills Stadium sitting socially distanced away from the nearest fan, which will be the way in which fans will have to sit in the upcoming game.  In the episode, Marge must rescue Lisa when she is mistakenly granted political asylum in Canada while on a vacation to Niagara Falls. Homer also takes Maggie to a “Daddy and Me” class.

The musical mock salute to upstate New York drew substantial attention from the natives of that area, including a response from the New York State Republican Committee blaming the policies of Andrew Cuomo for making the region a laughingstock  and a fact check from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, which concluded most of the claims were true but that some (such as Fox News viewership and disability claims) were misleading or unprovable.  The Great New York State Fair responded that they were taking the song in jest but would invite the writers to the fair to allow them to see the area in person.

The episode came under fire in late April 2019 for offending some people. While the episode mocked American and Canadian heads of state Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau and brought up the SNC-Lavalin affair, the aspects that caused offense were largely related to the Frank Sinatra parody song where Homer made fun of Upstate New York and for the use of the slur “newfie” in relation to Canadian residents of Newfoundland. In the latter several Canadian children chime “stupid newfies” before a character closely resembling Ralph Wiggum calls himself one and proceeds to beat a baby seal pup plush toy with a club while singing about being a Newfoundlander.  Musician Bruce Moss rejected an offer from the show’s producers to use his song “The Islander” for the episode, referring to them as “morally bankrupt” and turning down $20,000 US.

What will The Simpsons predict next? Well, a new episode premieres this Sunday Night @ a special time of 9 pm ET/PT, check your local listings for FOX. The episode is entitled “The Dad-Feelings Limited” and in it, Comic book guy and his wife Kumiko debate having a baby all the while comic book guy’s origin story is revealed.
