Spoilers Below

“Sonic for Hire” is back, debuting its sixth foul-mouthed, pixilated season on YouTube.

For those of you noobs, “Sonic For Hire” is the Machinima Happy Hour short series which finds Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog(and his sidekick Tails) out of work and pulling odd-jobs, which always involve helping classic video game characters, from various games, across various consoles, and various time periods. Poking fun at the silly game premises are a regular feature.

In the Season 6 premier, Sonic has a moment of clarity while staring at a Tom Berenger poster, realizing that both he and Berenger are past their prime. Borrowing the Epoch time machine from Lucca and Chrono (of Super Nintendo’s “Chrono Trigger”) Sonic attempts to travel back in time to avoid ruining his career and blowing all his money on worthless Dreamcast stock. Oh, and also refrain from having multiple illegitimate children with Lucca.

Unfortunately, each time Sonic travels back he can’t resist sleeping with Lucca, until finally substituting Doctor Eggman (a.k.a. Doctor Robotnik) for himself so he can actually get to saving his career … next time.

This episode picks up right where the previous season left off, which, in this writer’s opinion, was the weakest season so far. Hopefully the show can get back to the quality level of the first three seasons, which is still entirely within reach. Throwing in a “Breaking Bad” reference in the premier was a good start. An old school, video game-stylized version of a current song (which pops up occasionally in the series) would have been nice too. But this is just a start, and as Tails foreshadowed, “it seems like there’s going to be a lot of holes in this season’s storyline.”

Stay tuned for next week’s review. In the meantime I’ll be playing Sonic on my Sega Genesis. Stop by. Bring your own kerosinis.
