Season Three Review: The Awesomes

When the first season of The Awesomes premiered, none of the other online streaming services had their own original animated comedy. Hulu was the first, and that means a lot. Since then, Hulu tried to double down, Netflix grabbed a bunch of headlines with BoJack Horseman, and Crackle got Bryan Cranston to star in a show that is produced by the same guys that do Robot Chicken. Hulu even tried to double down on original series, but where the streaming service really shines is in acquisitions.

Now, that’s not to take anything away from The Awesomes. The show is great! It features one of the most talented casts in the business, and is a well-written series that features a bunch of laughs. Unfortunately, The Awesomes is a show that seems like it could be on any major network and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

On one hand, The Awesomes lends itself to being shopped to international TV networks in premium lineups that feature the likes of Archer, Axe Cop, and others. On the other hand, very seldom does The Awesomes implement any story arcs that require you to binge watch which is an effective tool almost required for shows that are come from a streaming service. Usually, the show builds up to a big moment, we get our shit, and then we are left with a cliffhanger until the following season.

The Awesomes Season Three exhibits these qualities and gives us one of the show’s finest. New teams were introduced, the new villains were hilarious, and the last scene looks like Independence Day is on the way. But with language usually censored, I wonder if this show is better built for a broadcast network rather than a streaming service. Either way, a fourth season is well-deserved.
