Season Review: Tender Touches 2

Come a little bit closer now.

Adult Swim has been slowly but surely doing a swell job in introducing and massaging new adult animated comedy subgenres for their network. Since introducing the soap opera parody Tender Touches, the network has launched adult comedy franchises with influences from cop procedurals, anime, horror, and usually with great fanfare. Tender Touches 2 caps off the rather eclectic 2018 year for Adult Swim and the growth from the first season to the second season could showcase an exciting indication for what Adult Swim has planned for in 2019 and I’m excited about these prospects.

For the second season, Tender Touches sees Steve inheriting his mother’s island estate and trying to shack up with Michelle while Curtis deals with his long-lost sister Verna who leads him and his wife Charlene into an underground cavern that nearly ends in disaster. All this while Charlene is dealing with some sort of face tumor and being rife with giggles. The plot for Tender Touches 2 takes a bunch of the lessons that producers Dave Bonawits, Lauren Payne, and Max Simonet had learned the first time around and really continue to harness their skills to hopefully one day be elite storytellers. Anyone watching this show should definitely see stands of talent procurement much the same way Space Ghost Coast to Coast did for the producers of Archer, Aqua Teen, Squidbillies, and others, and I’m predicting a similar future for these guys.

Yes, the series is downright silly and, at times, completely underproduced comparative to the standards found in some of Adult Swim’s other quality programming. No one is confusing this show in terms of production value to say Mr. Pickles, it’s not even close. But, the story does a decent job of shining through, and really, half of the fun is when Charlene just goes off on tangents and of course all of the Operettas are solid gold in terms of their delivery and execution.

This holiday season, you’re gonna have a lot of time on your hands in which to binge, make Tender Touches 2 one of your choices. You won’t be disappointed, and you’ll have been part of a project that is sure to usher in the beginning of what could launch many a career down the road.
