Season Review: Devil May Care Season One (First Four Episodes)

For over 2000 years, the devil has just gotten a bad rap. Ironically, he’s the one thing all of the world’s religions pretty much agree on, but what if he’s just misunderstood? What if he’s just a guy trying to make a living like the rest of us? Enter Devil May Care.

The new adult animated comedy from Doug Goldstein known as Devil May Care sees the devil trying to give hell a new millennium makeover. Gone are the days of eons of strife and suffering and in are the days of an effort to gentrify hell for a new generation of hell raisers. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Technology is relegated to products like the Apple iMac, Microsoft’s Zune, and nightmarish looking websites, but there’s a decent downtown area that has access to food, fun, and the occasional visit from President McKinley.

Between the Titmouse-produced animation, and a who’s who of quality voice talent like Alan Tudyk, Pamela Adlon, Phil LaMaar, and newcomer Asif Ali who voices the role of “Beans” aka the Devil’s new social media marketing manager, the series draws heavily from Adult Swim’s past but the output should more than satisfy those longing for the return of Comedy Central’s classic series Ugly Americans. Like the aforementioned series, we get an urban environment filled with monsters and violence set against the setting of a workplace comedy with solid jokes. By far the most crass-scripted series on Syfy, Devil May Care’s excellent cast really grows into each other as time goes on and from that we get to see the devil tackle such hot topics like the ridiculousness of social media, the myth of Ouija boards and conjuring demons, and the backstory of how hell came to be in the first place.

There isn’t anything truly revolutionary going on with Devil May Care, and that’s alright. We have a few more episodes to go this season, and I think Devil May Care is pacing as one of the better new animated series of 2021. Syfy is giving the devil his due, and I’m here for it.

Devil May Care premieres on February 6th @ Midnight ET/PT, only on Syfy.
