SDCC2019 Recap: FOX Is Dominating With Animation Announcements On Day Two
Day two is expected to be even crazier. Get news on Archer, Solar Opposites, Bob’s Burgers, and more!
By the way, FOX totally has launched a rebrand of Animation Domination where the marketing team is using the term “AniDom” a phrase which, if you’ve been a long-time reader of Bubbleblabber, we actually coined five years ago. We actually don’t mind and are actually flattered, but maybe a wave hello every-once-in-a-while would be nice.
In any event, FOX is NOT fucking around this San Diego Comic-Con. There are huge ferries wheels, hotel graphics, and trolleys with Animation Domination. And of course the announcements. Even though the heavy-hitting panels, those featuring The Simpsons, Family Guy, and other Animation Domination notables aren’t happening until tomorrow, we did get a couple of panels to help leave us appetized and with a whole lot of information.
One big piece of news from FOX camp, James Corden (Cats) will be teaming up with 20th Century FOX to develop an animated comedy called Dead Henry featuring the lead character who lives in heaven and is searching for the meaning of the afterlife. The series will be a co-production between CBS TV and 20th Century FOX which may get tricky if this thing gets picked up, but the premise sounds excellent. Here’s news from each of the FOX panels that happened on Friday:
Bob’s Burgers cast and the crew was on hand to talk about their upcoming season where we got to get additional insight on episodes and no sign of Kristen Schaal or Eugene Mirman. Fortunately, we did get a sexy sizzle reel that got fans excited. Expect all of the holidays to be accounted for yet again this upcoming season. The show is still in its early stages of development so I won’t give a lot of way in terms of clips shown and whatnot, but Solar Opposites feels like a Rick and Morty spinoff. Now, don’t expect the two to crossover according to creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, corporate politics wouldn’t allow it, but the aesthetic, the voices (obviously), and the writing all feel very much like the Adult Swim smash-hit series. That’s not a bad thing, it’s almost like comparing American Dad to Family Guy or Daria and Beavis & Butthead. With the franchises sharing a certain zeitgeist that gives us a fresh direction on a familiar premise.
In this instance, it’s aliens from different planets that land on Earth and become a family more for survival purposes than anything else. Tiffany Haddish, Alfred Molina, Christina Hendricks, Andy Daly, Alan Tudyk, and Thomas Middleditch will star in the show which is in production for eight episodes that will all drop on Hulu sometime next year. The producers’ remark that because the series is on a streaming platform, it allows for more of a serial format rather than an episodic one employed by Rick and Morty and that a second season is already in development for Solar Opposites. As mentioned, clips were shown, but everything’s still pretty much in animatics right now and probably a bit off.
Cast and crew for the 2019’s most underrated series, Archer, were on hand with the major news being that Archer was picked up for an 11th season by FXX. The show will see creator Adam Reed take a reduced role in producing the series and will see Sterling and the artists formerly known as ISIS return to their spy roots. No word yet on how many episodes are coming or when the season will premiere.
Cast and crew from FOX’s upcoming Bless the Harts set to premiere September 29th was on hand to talk about all things being the new kids on the block and as you can see from the clip below that shows additional footage, this one’s a bit different. Creator Emily Spivey has remarked that series like The Simpsons and King of the Hill were major inspirations for both her and her new series but really wanted us to know that this show is North Carolina at its heart. Kumail Nanjiani will voice the role of Jesus Christ in a cast that is already impressive.
