The crowd was stunned. In probably the biggest news of all of Comic Con, executive producer walked onto the San Diego Comic Con stage and first thing he did was sit down and made an announcement that shook. There will be a Simpsons/Futurama crossover. That’s not to take away from all of the other cool stuff on tap for The Simpsons this fall with confirmed guest stars like Kristen Wiig, Stan Lee, Liz Moss, and Zach Galifianakis, a Guillermo Del Toro produced Simpsons couch gag for the next Treehouse of Horror installment, and a sequel to “Holidays of Future Passed”.

All those things are great, but Futurama fans shed a tear knowing that there will be one more chance to see there favorite characters following the show’s exodus from Comedy Central. Here’s the interesting development that could come from this…could FOX be the next destination for Futurama??

Way back in March of ’99, Futurama would actually premier on FOX until its eventual cancellation in the odd month of August 2003. The franchise would go on to release a bunch of direct-to-DVD films and get syndication on Adult Swim. Ratings and sales were so good it caused Comedy Central to pick the series back up and order new episodes. However, while all this is happening, Facebook would become a thing and Futurama would accrue around 28 million fans! This would certainly help show creator Matt Groening in helping shop the series when pitching to networks and with FOX making some recent changes to its lineup following the cancellation of American Dad and The Cleveland Show, one could think that there would be at LEAST one open spot for a new (or returning) series. Wouldn’t be the first time FOX brought back a series, ever hear of Family Guy?

Do you kids know what a backdoor pilot is? Basically, it’s a way for a television series to film a standalone episode similar to what The Office did in its final season with the episode ‘The Farm’ starring Dwight Schrute. With the Futurama/Simpsons episode set to happen this coming season on FOX, could this be in a sense a backdoor pilot to see how the animated series would do in a return to prime-time??

One could hope…however we don’t have long to wait because an all new season of The Simpsons kicks off this Fall on FOX.
