Review: Warhammer 40K – Angels of Death “Reborn In Blood”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Uh…psyche? Turns out Kazarion didn’t die after all, so him and a couple other faceless Blood Angels manage to make it back to the Sword of Baal with the techno-priest, having thwarted the Tyranid threat…or did they?

To be continued?

OUR TAKE

Huh, that was unexpected. As mentioned previously, I was totally ready to see this season end with Kazarion and all of the angels on the planet massacred in a pyrrhic victory to get the priest to bring the big black cube of indeterminate function (which is revealed to actually be…a big black glowing pyramid of indeterminate function in the mid-credits scene) to the ship and at least be satisfied knowing the stopped the alien cultists from taking over the cosmos. So, I guess I feel kinda…disappointed? I’m not sure that’s quite the word for it, but somehow the fact that some Blood Angels were spared dying for the cause makes this feel surprisingly less bloody than expected. I suppose this means that we’ll get some of these characters to carry over into a hopeful second season, should this series be renewed, though I was getting the impression that Kazarion’s arc was about reconnecting with his chapter and becoming re-accepted by them before dying with them in battle as all in his group seem to yearn for. Though with him being the only central surviving space marine, maybe they’ll make him the new captain? That could be a potentially interesting plot, to see him suddenly be given leadership over some newbies and try to inspire them like Orpheo did for him.

And he’s not the only death fake out, as Ignis the Big Blood Robot actually got a somewhat sad death scene at the beginning, only for the tech priest to revive him with…I don’t know, Christmas Spirit? I wonder if the Blood Angels celebrate Christmas. Apparently the Warhammer universe was very militantly secular for a period of time, so maybe it’s Sanguinius…mas. Anyway, this finale was pretty much just wrap up for this whole story with some teases for a potential second season. And as far as wrap ups go, it was fine, though I still feel like reviving some characters who had good enough send offs wasn’t the best idea. I’m still just a newbie to Warhammer stuff, but this seemed primed to be basically an anthology series with each season focusing on a different team of Blood Angels. Maybe it’ll pay off in how they use Kazarion and Ignis in the next season, but I can’t really judge a season that hasn’t happened yet. What I can do is judge the hell out of THIS season, which I will do when going over all ten episodes next week for the Season Review!
