Review: Unikitty “No Day Like Snow Day”

Find out what we think of Cartoon Network’s newest franchise.

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The episode begins when Unikitty’s Arch Nemesis “Master Frown” gleefully revels in the misery of snow day but much to his shock, he discovers that Unikitty’s kingdom is unaffected by this force of nature, as they remain full of joy in spite of the excessive snow. In Frown’s attempt to ruin things, he’s accidentally trapped inside a snowman made by Unikitty’s brother “Puppycorn”. With everyone blindly thinking the snowman is alive as Frown attempts to scream out of the snowman, they just hear incoherent gibberish as he struggles to move.

Given the simple-minded nature of Puppycorn after saying he wants the Snowman to be his friend “forever”, They end up breaking the news to him that Snowmen can’t survive in the Summer so the royal scientist Dr. Fox suggests sending the snowman adrift to the North Pole to stay alive. The episode ends with an unexpected twist that happens after they send Frown adrift when Unikitty’s royal advisor “Richard” and her Bodyguard “Hawkodile” privately reveal know the truth about Frown being inside the snowman the whole time.

Our Take

This actually made me laugh. For a character that was randomly introduced in “The Lego Movie“, Unikitty remains consistent to the unpredictable nature as we saw of her in the Lego Movie despite Tara Strong taking over but I got no complaints. Knowing that Ed Skudder is involved, you see a bit of a “Dick Figures” aesthetic with the way Master Frown’s face fluidly animates complete with quick and reactionary expressions that don’t feel out of place for a strange looking yellow Emoji creature.

Compared “Teen Titans Go!” which keeps dominating Cartoon Network’s airwaves with its mind-numbing randomness, the episode itself is primarily a series of violently comedic setpieces that often happen at the expense of Frown’s character, yet excel at being fast, fun and energetic. In terms of presentation, the colorful atmosphere & scenery works while hilariously clashing with the random violence that occurs in the proceedings.
