Review: Tigtone and the Pilot

There isn’t actually a pilot in this show, it’s really just all about Tigtone.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Tigtone follows a fantastical hero sent out on quests that are more or less errands. In the pilot episode the King/Queen Siamese twin sends Tig out to retrieve a wizard who is being tortured to death. Fortunately, Tig is able to make a trade and return the dying wizard, but not for long. By the way, Tigtone is REALLY excited about carrying out way more quests.

Our Take

Tigtone is not completely unlike Apollo Gauntlet in it’s premise, but it might be more out of control. While any sign of a discernible plot is more or less barren, the pilot episode does a good enough job at throwing enough randomity that you may not even care, similar to the same effect I get for a lot of Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes.

The series comes from Babyhemyth Productions and Titmouse but is clearly way more Babyhemyth Productions as creator Andrew Koehler’s voice is all over this one in keeping with the spirit of his films from yesteryear that keep the soul of its intent, that being a parody of fantasy games and movies. The series utilizes performance capture to go along with a digitally painted look which gives the short this sort of look derived from British or even Biblical literature.

In terms of voices, our hero is voiced by the great Blake Anderson and he does a swell job as “Tigtone” as he certainly gives the role a vigor all the while delivering sword swipes of punchlines that usually hit, but for me, the real fun was in the technical shortcuts the show takes. The likes of Trace Beaulieu, Bill Corbett, John DiMaggio and more round out a back-end cast that doesn’t quite have a favorite for me. Other than Tigtone, all of the other characters are usually funnier in their visual presentation rather anything that was written for them.

Overall, Tigtone is a solid entry for Adult Swim pilots. I had my misgivings at first, but overall, this is a heroic tale I could certainly get behind. For fans of Your Highness, Apollo Gauntlet, and even Game of Zones, this would be a good addition to your watch collection. I hear Adult Swim has already ordered this one, so it may not take long before we get more episodes to snack on.
