Review: The Patrick Star Show “Backpay Payback”

Overview

Granny Tentacles helps Squidward collect his paper delivery money from Cecil.

Our Take

This time around, we have a Squidward episode focused on his relationship with his hyper-assertive grandmother who after finding out that Cecil (Patrick’s frugal father) has screwed over Squidward’s paper run for the last time and to put it mildly, physical comedic hijinx ensues.

The rest of the episode in some ways almost feels like a Tom & Jerry cartoon in the sense much of it relies on both physical comedy and chasing after both Cecil and the Grandpa who is equally as stubborn in terms of not paying off debts and even prides himself in keeping track of that in a scrapbook.

A wacky and passable episode that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Predictable at times with its cliche storytelling, but harmless in terms of subject matter while showing that not everything Squidward does is antagonistic for the sake of it. At most, he’s reactionary to Spongebob and even Patrick’s family antics, and the fact that his grandmother isn’t having it shows how far this has elevated. At the very least the proceedings weren’t boring…
