Review: Tangled The Series “What The Hair?”

Does the premiere live up to expectations?

Spoilers Below

Rapunzel wants to tell Eugene the story of how she got her hair back. Cassandra is afraid that he will tell everyone that she is the one that helped Rapunzel escape. If word got out that she was involved, she would be punished severely. In order to figure out how Rapunzel got her hair back, Cassandra takes Rapunzel to see Varian, a magician. Except it turns out that he isn’t a magician. He’s an alchemist.

Varian puts Rapunzel in a machine that will tell exactly what her hair is made of. It’ll only take 86 tests. While Rapunzel is in the machine, Eugene barges in. He followed Rapuzel and Cassandra to see what they were up to. Well, it turns out that Varian is a huge Flynn Rider fan. Only he doesn’t realize that Eugene isn’t really Flynn Rider.

When Varian realizes that he doesn’t have the machine that will print out the results of Rapunzel’s tests, he takes Eugene with him to the shed. Once they retrieve the machine, Varian takes Eugene to a network of caves under his village. It turns out that Varian has built five giant pressurized tanks that will deliver hot water to the townspeople. The chemical mixture that Varian has been using to heat the water has also been causing earthquakes and Eugene is afraid the tanks will blow up.

Of course, Eugene is right. He manages to get back to Varian’s castle shortly before the tanks explode. Cassandra runs after Varian, who was trying to fix the tanks. Thankfully, no one gets injured. Rapunzel’s hair somehow saves her and Eugene while Cassandra and Varian get stuck in a tube. Everyone is safe but Varian’s father is very disappointed in him.

As they get ready to head back to the castle, Rapunzel promises to always tell Eugene the truth. On their way back, she tells him the entire story of how she got her hair back.

On one hand, I’m glad that Rapunzel came clean with Eugene. She was having a big problem keeping the story secret from him. On the other hand, I’m sad that the report from the machine lost the results of Rapunzel’s tests in the big earthquake/explosion. And it’s weird that Cassandra and Eugene call Rapunzel “Raps” for short. Overall, it was a decent episode. Nothing spectacular but now we can get past this “We can’t tell Eugene” thing and move onto bigger things.
