Review: Tangled “Rapunzel’s Enemy”

Why can’t we be friends?

Spoilers Below

During the announcement for the annual Goodwill Gopher Grab, Rapunzel gets booed by one of the citizens. At first, Rapunzel doesn’t realize it’s a bad thing. After Cassandra and Eugene explain things to her, Rapunzel decides she needs to find out who doesn’t like her and why. It turns out that Monty, the owner of the candy shop, beloved by everyone, hates the princess. So Rapunzel takes it upon herself to make him like her.

She knits him a scarf, which he hates. She makes him a chocolate bust, which he hates. Eventually, she decides to go undercover to find out why he hates her so much. Rapunzel spends the day with Monty as Misty, a brunette in a large overcoat. The two quickly become fast friends. Misty even becomes Monty’s partner for the Gopher Grab so he can win a medal like his ancestors.

When the Gopher Grab goes wrong (thanks to Eugene’s mess up), Rapunzel has to reveal herself to save Monty’s life. However, this doesn’t make Monty like her any better. It turns out that Monty is super into tradition and Rapunzel has changed a lot of the traditions in the kingdom. At that point, Rapunzel realizes that she doesn’t particularly like Monty either. The pair decides to continue their mutual dislike of each other. After all, not everyone is going to like you.

Since this is only the second episode of the series, I shouldn’t be too hard on it. However, this was a rather boring episode. Sure, it had the lesson of “not everyone will like you” but nothing really happened. The only time there was anything happening was during the Gopher Grab when Monty and the gopher were in the river. There was a whole subplot with Cassandra and Eugene and berries but even that went nowhere. Overall, it was just meh. I hope the rest of the season isn’t like this.
