Review: SuperMansion ‘Puss in Books’

SuperMansion S1E5

Spoilers Below:

While filming a PSA, the League discovered that Cooch is illiterate, and because she doesn’t have a high school diploma, cannot be a member of the team. The others then banded together to teach her in the hopes of her earning a GED in one week’s time.

The first subject was history, with American Ranger as the teacher. However, when Ranger caught himself up on the 70 years he missed, he became upset and left, hoping to find the American dream. First stop: Detroit. The city was a wasteland, but a man named Reggie introduced to Ranger to weed and a man named Hawkfeather, who would apparently be able to heal his wounded soul. Unfortunately, his spirit animal ended up being a murderous buffalo, which stalked Ranger back to the mansion.

Meanwhile, JewBot (the home-ec teacher) discovered that Cooch has ADD, and after she got her hands on some pills, became a start student. JewBot destroyed the Adderall, mistaking them for birth control pills, and she entered the exam unprepared. Afraid, she bolted. However, the gang found her back in her old home and told her that the pills didn’t make her smart, and she returned to take and ace the exam. She neglected to put her name on it though, and was declared ineligible by Sgt. Agony.

When the crazed buffalo showed up, Ranger learned that Cooch studied hard and passed her test, and his faith in the American dream was restored, thus killing his evil spirit animal. When Hawkfeather (actually Professor Hawkfeather of New Mexico State University) witnessed this, he awarded Cooch an honorary degree.

In Case You Missed It:

1) The newspaper headline read, “League of Free-Dumb.”

2) Ranger began his class with, “Dear heavenly, white, Christian father…”

3) “Joe Millionaire” was mentioned in the history textbook.

4) I liked the Good Will Hunting sequence between Cooch and JewBot.

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Cooch. Her whole thing is being dumb and promiscuous, and so far I haven’t quite warmed up to that. But in this episode it was revealed that she’s actually not a complete moron, but just needs to focus. Of course, they didn’t really show anything about her learning to read, which is how this whole fiasco came about – but whatever, it’s a cartoon.

Also as a positive, there was a nice side story to the main plotline. I really enjoyed seeing Ranger’s search for the American dream, partially because I’m a huge Hunter S. Thompson fan (if you couldn’t guess), and also because it spoofed Easy Rider a bit too, and I dig that film. Plus, we got to see Ranger smoking weed and huffing bright green paint, which was endlessly amusing. Something about straight-laced people being high really hits my funny bone.

But my favorite part of the episode was Black Saturn as the cool bully. In fact, he’s slowly becoming my favorite character overall, considering he always marches to the beat of his own drum and usually causes more trouble than he solves. The “for a good time” repeating gag wasn’t hilarious, but Saturn’s whole attitude and the fact that he probably thinks he’s actually helping was quite amusing.

In the end, my few critiques were balanced out by a lot of strong aspects, making this episode about on par with the others. I wish I could delve into this a bit further, but a cold recently gripped my immune system with its icy hands, and I fear the end is near. The end of me being able to string words together into a sentence, at least.

So check out the latest episode on Crackle, while I go get some sleep and some drugs.
