Review: Steven Universe “Storm in the Room”

Shoulda kept this one in the closet.

Spoilers Below

With Steven back in Beach City, Connie can now go back home herself. But Connie’s mom is late picking her up. Steven lets her hang out at his house while she waits. As they play games, Connie gets more and more worried about her mom. Connie has tried to call her multiple times but she isn’t picking up. Finally, Connie’s mom shows up. It turns out she had to cover someone at work and her cell phone died. All is well now.

But is it? Now that Steven is alone, he finds himself drawn to the portrait of Rose Quartz. He eventually goes to his room in the temple to speak to Rose. At first, everything seems fine. When Steven realizes that he is only talking to his perception of Rose and not Rose herself, he begins to think about all of the terrible things she has done. A dark storm quickly overtakes the room. Steven asks Rose if he was only created so she wouldn’t have to face her awful deeds. Rose points out that she already told him that she desperately wanted him to exist. It isn’t his job to clean up after her. Feeling a bit better, Steven heads back to the house.

Tired from his emotional trip, Steven lies down on the couch. Just then, Greg and the Gems come home from installing the new sign on the car wash. And they brought pizza. Now all is well.

This was a rather slow episode. Sure, Steven got a chance to kinda scream out his frustrations at Rose but nothing was really resolved. He didn’t get a chance to actually talk to some version of Rose – perhaps a hologram or something – that could answer his questions. The version of Rose that he spoke to was only the version he already knew. I would love for Steven to get some answers to his questions. Why did Rose shatter Pink Diamond? Will we ever find out?
