Review: Star Wars Rebels “Double Agent Droid”

We’ve got a double agent in our midst.

Spoilers Below

Hera sends a small team consisting of Wedge, Chopper, and AP-5 to steal Imperial codes. Of course, Chopper and AP-5 argue the entire time. At the Imperial station, the two of them end up going their own ways. AP-5 manages to get the codes, while Chopper is reprogrammed by an Imperial specialist that recognized him as a Rebel. For some reason, only AP-5 notices the changes in Chopper’s attitude. He tries to notify Wedge but the young Rebel doesn’t listen.

The team reconnects with Hera, Zeb, and Ezra. AP-5 hands over the codes and, once again, reports that he thinks Chopper has been compromised. Even Hera notices that Chopper is acting strangely when he says he has to update his database and doesn’t know that his memory files were wiper for security reasons. But she only recommends a diagnostic scan for him.

Suddenly, the ship drops out of hyperspace. Hera asks Chopper for an explanation but he only tells them that he is in the engine room. When AP-5 questions whether everyone should go to see what is going on, Ezra calls him a coward. So they all go. And Chopper locks them in the cargo bay. The Imperial Controller then has Chopper open the cargo bay doors because he has no use for prisoners. Luckily, Hera manages to reseal the door manually. But now they need AP-5 to do a spacewalk in order to open the hatch back into the ship. Which he does but, once his job is completed, he gets knocked off the ship into space by Chopper.

Back inside, Zeb stuns Chopper with his bo-rifle. Ezra pulls out the Imperial data spike, interrupting their download. Angry, Hera hooks Chopper up to the Ghost and sends an energy blast back to the computer that was controlling him. The circuits on the Imperial cruiser overload and the ship explodes. Hera begs for Chopper to come back, which he does after a few seconds.

Once Chopper is back, the group realizes that AP-5 is gone. Once they retrieve the droid, Chopper apologizes. AP-5 thinks this means that Chopper is still compromised. Chopper wacks him (and Wedge) a few times with his little droid arms.

There was some weird stuff going on in this episode. AP-5 actually “sang” a few songs, including a duet with Chopper from “Annie Get Your Gun.” Wedge used a space toilet. No one wanted to even think that Chopper could be compromised. Then the group insisted they all stay together when they realize something is wrong with Chopper instead of leaving one person behind just in case. Everything just felt wrong. It almost felt like some sort of parody of the show. With that said, I loved how they used AP-5 and his dry wit. But I don’t understand why the Ghost crew doesn’t travel together anymore. This time they left Kanan behind. I miss having the whole group together. One would think that they would be closer now that Sabine is gone. I miss the old gang.
