Review: Star Trek: Lower Decks “Trusted Sources”

Overview

Victoria Nuzé gets an interview with the USS Cerritos where everyone gives a negative account of working on the ship with the exception of Mariner. Problem is, Captain Freeman gets wind of negative third-hand accounts of Mariner’s deposition and is annoyed so much that Freeman jettisons her daughter off of the ship and to another crew where Mariner subsequently resigns and takes off with a special guest.

Meanwhile, Freeman tries to show the reporter a good time by bringing her on a mission that ends up being an ambush that nearly gets the Cerritos crew wiped out only to be saved by Starfleet’s new autonomous fleet. When Freeman tries to get her daughter back on her crew after a misunderstanding, Mariner is headed on her own adventures.

Our Take

This week’s premise wasn’t all that original and served more or less like just a nostalgic trip, but the climactic action sequences were fantastic. Short…but fantastic. With a couple of cliffhangers thrown in for good measure that should help serve for a fun-filled finale, Star Trek: Lower Decks is gearing up to close its finest season. It’s not the episode to look for a bunch of jokes and quips, I was kind of hoping to get to see more of Mariner’s new crew and responsibilities that ultimately saw her quit, but a serviceable episode that will set up what looks to be a crazy-ass finale with a bunch of questions hoping to be answered in the process.
