Review: Squidbillies”Lipstick on a Squid”

The squids are back! [In Early’s mangled voice] Whoa!!

Spoilers Below

The thing that I particularly love about all of Dave Willis’s creations are his creativity and surreal, bizarre tone, that cannot be replicated. When a living, anthropomorphic talking redneck squid’s skin is being dissolved away because of the unknown effects of an erectile dysfunction medication that he is testing, you know Dave Willis came up with it. I couldn’t make this stuff up, people. Dave has the greatest warped mind of the late-night cartoon genre. It is definitely safe to say that Adult Swim would not be on the map, if it weren’t illuminated out into the spotlight with the Aqua Teen. Aqua Teen Hunger Force put Adult Swim on the map (I hope Ted Turner and Mike Lazzo thank Dave everyday, like clockwork); there is no denying it. Aqua Teen‘s cousin Squidbillies, continues to push the strange and abnormal, albeit very entertaining style that the nighttime block provides us.

Rusty comes home late one night only to be caught by Early red-handed wearing makeup and a new hairstyle. Early is disgusted by his son’s appearance, until, I repeat until, he learns that money is to be made. The old man signs himself up, along with Granny, for further cosmetic/chemical testing in order to “make an honest living.” Deorderant applied directly to the eyes, as well as chugged in increments of gallons, is part of the testing. The frat boy makes a return and is as fratish and douchey as usual. With both Granny and Early deformed by the testing- Granny is transforming into overweight white trash (reminded me of Carl, honestly), and Early has light escaping from all his orifices- Rusty has the most sense by opting with the potentially hazardous cosmetics. Rusty decides to meet up the Greek frat boy at the house party and is not welcomed, so he defaults to the hippie protestor chick, voiced by Amber Nash (voice of Pam on Archer) and he witnesses her burn the medical testing facility down.

The episode was fantastic and reminded me why Squidbillies frequently holds its own to Aqua Teen, in the category of insane 11 minute Adult Swim shows. I can’t wait to see what else the Cuyler clan has in store for us in this upcoming 15-episode season.
