Review: SpongeBob’s Spookiest Scenes Countdown Special

Overview

Hosted by “Patchy the Pirate” (Tom Kenny), Patchy hosts a “Top 20” clip show of Spongebob’s scariest moments voted by fans online in a half-hour special.

Our Take

Over the past summer, Nickelodeon asked fans to vote for their favorite spooky SpongeBob scenes on NickPlay.com. where the Fans could vote on a specific set of episodes and built around this, a house experiencing a blackout as a framing device, Patchy the Pirate along with his bird “Potty” cover everything from Spongebob being frightened by a Butterfly to grotesque transformation scenes, to even a memorable episode that made it to the No.1 spot that is considered Iconic at this point.

In terms of choices, it’s not a bad list and I can see how kids can easily be scared or disturbed at such “nightmare-fuel” like imagery even if it’s tame by most adult standards, And this is coming from a guy who grew up watching Ren & Stimpy when it was new in the early ’90s. On the subject of that, The show also takes a detour with random moments such as the scariest closeups which consist of detailed gross-out closeups of objects, faces, and body parts Reminiscent of the shocking close-ups you’d see from the aforementioned Ren & Stimpy show.

For a half-hour that’s stretched in-between commercial breaks, this at least felt like more effort was put into this compared to the other special they had, and it’s great that Nickelodeon themselves let the fans vote to show some degree of care for their audience.

Don’t be shocked if they do another top numbered list for Christmas Specials.
