Review: SpongeBob SquarePants “Ma and Pa’s Big Hurrah”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
When SpongeBob’s parents come to visit, their thirst for thrills comes as a big surprise.

Our Take:
The lovable sponge is back this month to deliver another series of brand-new undersea adventures for our enjoyment. This weekend kicks off with SpongeBob’s parents visiting their spongy son when their retirement home from Avocado Acres melts. Although, this family-friendly get-together quickly turns wild when SpongeBob discovers his parents’ crazy sides.
The episode consists of SpongeBob’s attempt to act mature and impress his parents when he realizes they haven’t visited him in a while. But, of course, in typical SpongeBob fashion, he takes it a step too far by setting up a list of boring adult things for them to do, including sleeping at 4 pm. However, what Ma and Pa really wanted was to have fun with their favorite crazy “boy”.
What follows is a wild and consistently funny montage featuring SpongeBob and his parents doing crazy scenarios like TP-ing Squidward’s house and wrestling. Although, the latter resulted in SpongeBob unexpectedly wrestling a masked Patrick who wanted his peanuts. It then concludes with them skating through town, resulting in SpongeBob giving up his adultness to revert to the fun sponge they know and love.
Overall, “Ma and Pa’s Big Hurrah” is an entertaining episode that puts SpongeBob’s loving parents front and center. The plot device involving SpongeBob acting mature is nothing new, as it has already been portrayed in the season two episode, “Grandma’s Kisses”. However, seeing SpongeBob’s parents having the time of their lives with their son is enough to get me out of my “boring adult” phase.
