Review: SpongeBob SquarePants “Goodbye, Krabby Patty?”

Mr. Krabs is inspired to start selling Krabby Patties in grocery stores as a pre-frozen deal. To help, he turns to Don Grouper and his advertising agency to really spread the word about the fact that Bikini Bottom’s lovable entrees are now in stores and that customers don’t have to worry about the hassle of going to the restaurant. Everything appears to go fine at first, but Krabs starts changing everything pretty much right off the bat. The restaurant is turned into a museum with Spongebob named the curator, Squidward is fired, the Krabby Patties are made out of sand for extra profit, and the growing attraction that is the Krabby Patties’ spokesman aka Patrick is getting in the way of the latter’s friendship with Spongebob.

After a while, Spongebob has had enough. First thing’s first, “The Yellow Box” rehires Squidward, then he sets out to remind everyone that the original Krabby Patty is the best, not this honky horse shit that’s sold in stores. Spongebob does just that by convincing Patrick to tell the truth about the ‘ingredients’ in the patties which then ends the retail business as we know it. Fortunately, in the time it takes Mr. Krabs to come back to the restaurant, Spongebob’s able to bring the restaurant back up to snuff and remind the loyal customers what a real Krabby Patty is all about.

Our Take

Jon Hamm always makes for a great guest star, and the 200th episode of Spongebob Squarepants is proof of that. Can you imagine that? That’s 200 episodes or an average about a little over 11 episodes a year aired since the preview episode of Spongebob Squarepants aired back on May 1st, 1999. Phew!

Really funny episode. I loved the constant “Yellow Box” slurs thrown at Spongebob during the course of the episode, and despite the fact that this was a 30-minute affair, I thought the episode moved at a ginger pace and no signs of filler or lag in terms of comedic quality. The most important moral to take from the episode is to remember to always buy and cook fresh, and never buy frozen. Ironic, due to the fact that I’m sure Spongebob’s face is on numerous amounts of products all over the supermarket, both fresh and not fresh. In any case, this was one of the better Spongebob episodes and it comes at a time when Nickelodeon needs to start picking up the pace in terms of new originals.
