Review: Red vs Blue “Recovery”

Memory lapses.

Overview:

We see what happened to Washington and Carolina, and how they’ve been.

Our Take:

The good news is that Washington survived. He seems to be on the mend and is still physically fit enough to deal with a fair amount of action. Carolina teases him for his age, but he insists that’s not a problem. it starts with what seems like them bonding- and then that’s all swept away.

Then there’s the bad news. As we’re quick to find out, Washington hasn’t fully recovered. His physical abilities remain fairly okay, but he’s actually suffering from memory lapses. He remembers who he is, so he doesn’t have amnesia, but his short-term memory seems to be severely suffering. He will repeat things that he didn’t say that long ago, and since Carolina hasn’t told him that he hasn’t completely recovered, he believes that everything is normal. After all, you don’t think anything’s wrong when you’re the one forgetting it.

Dylan is also back, although she’s reluctant to get in on the action herself. As always, she’s a spot of logic in this world, and has figured out what happened to the main team. She’s figured out that they’re lost in time, as unbelievable as it sounds to her. Getting involved would ruin her career, so she puts Carolina and Washington in contact with field experts. Neither of the former Freelancers were at the pizza spot when Doc delivered the time travel guns, so they don’t have easy access weapons. How they’re going to find a way is a mystery.

Most importantly, there’s Washington. Washington wants to go help out the team, but he’s in no condition to fight when he can’t remember details for long periods of time. That’s extremely dangerous on a mission, especially where the stakes are even higher than normal in a fight against actual deities. Carolina can’t keep an eye on him the entire time. Hopefully, he’s able to recover because otherwise, there will be trouble going forward.

This episode was honestly, a lot better than the ones preceding it. The jokes landed, and there was a sense of urgency. Milling around in Red vs Blue is fun, because that’s the origin of the series, but a couple episodes in, and we desperately needed to pick up the pace. So far, this season has been extremely slow in getting the plot going, and it’s about time that the engine’s started.
