Review: OUT THERE “Ace’s Wild”

A Whole Barrel of Spoilers Below

I’m pretty sure that my school didn’t have a sect of ‘Popular Artsy Types’. I mean, I definitely don’t remember anyone that was popular and also artsy. I guess the closest we had to that was the occasional uncharacteristically attractive girl in the drama club (hrmmm…. I suppose that hot famous actresses have to start somewhere… so I guess it does kind of make sense). Now that I really thinkg about it, we did also have a whole sect of punk rockers that I guess could fit the part (more or less) but they were still a lot different than the lot of creative weirdos we find in ‘Ace’s Wild’, this week’s episode and also season finale, of Out There. #SeasonFinaleReviewBitches

Two plots for the price of one. That’s two, count em’ – two, plots for the price of one. That my friend, is the ole’ Holford special.

This week’s HS (as we call them in the biz) features “Chad and Chris almost fit in somewhere” and of course, your classic “Jay fantasizes about something and then eventually lives it in a far more lame fashion”.

First course. Chad finds himself smack dab in the middle of the super affluent Yearbook Committee after one of its leading ladies spies Chad’s ‘turning my teacher into something’ doodle (a walrus-man hybrid in this depiction – in case you were wondering). Having become the new resident artist of the clique, Chad is finally both heard and lauded by his peers (even though he’s really only just pretending to act the part – its actually working #HonestlyNoPunIntended #NotKidding #IAmTheGreatestWriterEverKnown. Chad quickly realizes that he may just have the power to drag his blood brother Chris up to Olympus [along side him] so a scheme is hatched to show the world that Chris is the new ‘Voice of the Wildman’ in town (a title to be proudly displayed in the upcoming Year Book). Shortly after watching Chris star in a fairly entertaining montage of ‘can you believe that I’m doing this?’ stunts, Chad learns that the Yearbook Clique doesn’t really enjoy Chris for his mysterious back story and lionhearted acts of tomfoolery, but more as a victim to laugh ironically towards and upon. In response to this [newly shared between the blood bros] revelation, Chris and Chad manage to fake Chris’s death during a ‘this is my last and greatest’ stunt. After watching Chris literally plummet to the ground engorged in flames (so they think) the committee tears out Chris’s existing ‘Voice of the Idiot’ page and creates a new ‘Ace’s Wild’ (Chris’s new self appointed bad-ass name) memorial page– thus sneakily ensuring Chris’s ‘wild card’ legacy a place in Holford history. Nobody outsmarts Chris ‘The Professor’ Novak forever – weird theatrical justice will be eventually served (this instance is no exception to the rule).

Second course. Jay wants a new bike. Jay gets a shitty new bike. Jay loses a big bike race. Rose feels terrible about the shitty-ass bike and somehow builds Jay a new ‘cool’ bike out of his existing shit-can. Jay loves bike. Jay still loses race. Crowd loves the losing bike anyway due to coolness. #NotASingleFuckIsGiven

Haha okay, I may have been a bit harsh on the Jay subplot here, but honestly, who is really supposed to care? Am I supposed to stand up and chant “YOU GO ROSE” when she goes ‘bad-ass’ (those quotes are supposed to be ironic – so please read them as such) and tries to defend her son’s public perception? I’m sorry, but this subplot lasted all of four minutes and really didn’t grab me at all – it probably could have been left out. Anyway. For ze main plot, I guess in terms of progression it was interesting seeing Chad and Chris being psuedo-popular for once. The Chris-Gone-Wild montage was definitely fun. Overall, this episode isn’t all bad, but it definitely didn’t make me reminisce nor really burst out laughing (Out There usually hits one of the two on a fairly regular basis). Maybe this episode just wasn’t for me. Maybe I was hoping for too much ‘spectacle’ out of a season finale. Maybe I’m still annoyed by Chad’s voice (lol because I am) – I can’t exactly put my finger on it – but I’m not left totally satisfied after this season’s finale. Downward-sideways-smiley-face.

I have a huge rant all pent up about Out There, but I’ll save that for my season wrap-up special fuckstravaganza (sp?). So if you wanna see me get all kinds of honest, make sure to keep it locked on BB for that.
