Review: Our Cartoon President “The Wall”

Will Trump finally get his wall built? And, of course, who the heck is paying for it?

Overview:

Trump is starting to get some clash back about not building his platform promised wall. Though he thinks it an unrealistic idea right now his family talks him into it. Using his business tactics he finds investors in his own cabinet, federal grants and… Russian investments. Yet, money is tight, and Trump is going to have to pull a rabbit out of his hat on this one.

Meanwhile, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Stephen Miller are sent to the southern border to break ground. A strange relationship develops with both of them learning some lessons about each other and themselves.

Our Take:

Oh, the infamous “wall”. Probably Trump’s biggest campaign promise fueled by fear and racism has gone by the wayside. It is easily one of the simplest examples of his dishonesty throughout his rise to the presidency. Honestly, how could he have ever expected Mexico to pay for something that would carry them no benefits whatsoever? And, people believed that! It’s a true crime of politics that they can say whatever they please without legitimacy or honest pursuit. It’s about time that this show called him out for it.

Which begs another question: Do you think the real Trump has seen this show? I mean, he does love the attention of the media. I would find it hard to believe that his curiosity would not get the best of him. It’s already evident that he followed the happenings of the last season of Saturday Night Live. He has clashed back at Steven Colbert. I think I’ve answered my question, he definitely watches this show.

Unfortunately, beyond the big theories and ideas, I found myself pretty bored with this episode. There was not a single joke that landed for me. The Huckabee Sanders and Miller storyline were a bit uncomfortable and I don’t see if that is based off any real-world happenings. After a strong episode last week it was a shame to watch Our Cartoon President slip back into the formula that was not really working.

There are some strengths to the show, but as I have mentioned before, they are too focused on a limited audience. An audience that not only follows politics close enough to catch the references but also watching an animated series on Showtime. I would hope that they could bring in some more entertaining moments that would reach a larger audience. Though, at least Trump’s watching.

It wasn’t a terrible episode, I just had a difficult time getting into the same old thing tonight. In animation you need to switch things up, repeat formulas do not stand up. So, to be fair, I attempt to judge this episode as I would if I didn’t come in with expectations of how it would go. If this is your first episode of Our Cartoon President than it will absolutely entertain.
